Students in grades K-2nd participate in the High Ability Learners (HALS) Program at SOS. Mrs. Mews begins by entering the classrooms of students in grades K-2nd and teaching whole group lessons containing challenging and above average material for a duration of 4-6 weeks. Next Mrs. Mews and the gen ed classroom teacher sit down and discuss which students they feel would benefit from the HALS Program and GT Services. These students are then placed into HALS and attend weekly small group pull-out sessions with Mrs. Mews where they participate in Problem Based Learning Activities which are eventually displayed at the yearly TAG EXPO.
Project Description
HALS students in 1st grade learned how to plan their own party. These students discover how to develop a them and plan decor and party favors around their theme. Students designed an invitation and develop their party on a budget according to the number of people invited. Student displayed their information on a 9 square display poster at the yearly TAG EXPO.
Package Design Project
Students applied basic measurement and engineering skills to work when they designed their very own package. HALS students learned the importance of prototyping, 3D shapes, and the influence of packing design on the real world.
