Students in grade levels 3rd-8th participate in a challenging and investigative problem based learning (PBL) program. These students learn to discover new concepts and develop ideas through the means of problem solving. Thus setting up student members of SOS TAG to become life long learners invested in their current and future education.
Project Description
Create a 40-60 page fun book. Do some research on the first fun book ever created…who designed it? What was in it? How many were sold and where…etc.? Write a 1-2 page paper on your findings. Next choose a target age range and begin developing different drawing activities, puzzles, quizzes, crosswords, word finds, eye spy games and more. Maybe your book will be all about ART, Sports, or Holidays. Possibly it will have different volumes for different age ranges, or challenge its readers to create their own images based on clues you create. It’s your book so it’s up to you. Next after you have completed your activities create a front and back cover, a table of contents and a dedication page. Now have copies of your book made and then bound. (Mrs. Mews will help you create copies and a binding.) Decide if you were to sell your book how much would it cost? Create a price tag. Then create a survey of at least 6 questions such as (On a scale from 1-10 how easy were my activities?) Next give a copy of your book to at least 10 students in your target age range. Have them complete at least 2 activities and report back to you on their experiences using the survey you created. Chart and report your findings. Based on your data should you change anything about your book before the EXPO if so… do it. Then have 5 more books copied and bound along with more copies of your survey (students who attend the EXPO will now be able to participate in your fun book activities as well as give you feedback on their experiences.) Finally create a board or an electronic presentation showing your research & thought process along with photos of all your steps. Present all your work and research at the Spring TAG EXPO.
Develop a New Line of Gift Wrap and Gift Bags
Project Description
Develop A New Line of Gift Bags & Gift Wraps: Research the inventor of gift bags/wrap. What year was it first used? What materials were used in creating the first gift bags/wraps? What types of materials are used now? On average how much do these items cost? Next write a 1-2 page paper containing your research findings. Now develop a concept or theme for your own creative line of gift bags/wraps. Choose a target audience either adults children or both. Decide if your line will be used for all celebrations, or will it be strictly for just Christmas, Birthdays, or Mother’s Day, etc.? Start with some sketches of your product. Make sure you consider size, material and color. Make a list of materials you will need and how much it will cost you to develop one gift bag or a roll of gift wrap. Now develop at least 6 prototypes. Give each item a price for retail.. (remember you need to make a profit, but you also need to sell your items so don’t make each bag worth $100). Next develop a survey with at least 6 questions such as (On a scale from 1-10 how much do you like my gift bag/wrap designs? Would you be willing to pay ____ for my product? Yes or No) Find at least 10 people in your target audience and show them your prototypes. After these individuals view your product have each one of them complete a survey. Chart your data. Based on your data do you need to change anything such as the material or the price if so…do it. Finally create a board or an electronic presentation showing your research & thought process along with photos of all your steps. Present all your work and research at the Spring TAG EXPO.
Create a New Sport or Game
Project Description
Create a new sport: Research the history of team sports. Where did they originate? What was the first team sport ever played? Why are team sports important? How long have team sports been a part of the American Culture…etc.? Now take your research and write a 1-2 page research paper compiling your data. Next develop, invent, and create your own sport. This sport must be different than any sport currently invented. Name your new sport; design a rule system, and a game piece (such as a ball) that will be used to play your new sport. Now create a survey of at least 6 questions such as (On a scale from 1-10 how much did you enjoy playing my new sport?) Next introduce your new sport to the world and have at least 3 different grade levels and 3 family members participate in playing your new game. Make sure to explain the rules clearly to anyone who plays your sport so that they may have as much fun as possible. Have all test subjects complete a survey and then chart your data findings. Be sure to take lots of photos during the times you are testing your game with others as these will be used in your final display. Next email the rules and a few photos to a PE teacher or youth group coordinator and ask if they would be interested in teaching and using your newly invented game. Meet with this individual to show them the game in person if requested. Make sure to record their opinions and consider any questions or changes they might suggest for your game. Record and report your results by creating a board or an electronic presentation showing your research & thought process along with photos of all your steps. Present all your work and research at the Spring TAG EXPO.
